BOSPORUS STRAIT
Istanbul, Türkiye (2022)
The sacred “grain corridor” pictured above is a waterway used for feeding almost 1 billion people by way of the Odesa-Istanbul line transporting millions of tons of grain from the fertile “black soil” of Ukraine, often referred to historically as the “bread basket” of Europe. Exports have been threatened by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, causing famine to loom for hundreds of millions. The UN with the diplomatic help of Turkey’s controversial President Erdoğan has struck a tenuous deal between Putin and Ukraine to keep the waterway functioning. This is a developing story.
